Father's Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. The day when we put our important men in the spotlight. Whether that is your father, bonus father, grandfather, uncle, best friend or neighbor, this year on June 18, 2023, we let them know they are appreciated. Where does Father's Day come from?

Before we start flooding you with great gifts for dads, let us tell you where Father's Day comes from. Like Mother's Day, Father's Day has blown over from America where the spectacle began. A few years after the first Mother's Day was celebrated, the first real Father's Day also took place there, on June 19, 1910. The day was introduced back in 1909 because of Sanora Smart Dodd's father from Washington. The death of his wife in childbirth left him alone to care for his six children, which Sanora felt should be brought to his attention. Only in 1972 was Father's Day officially recognized in America, before that the holiday came to the Netherlands. To be exact, in 1948. Since then, many countries around the world celebrate Father's Day and we celebrate it on the third Sunday in June. However, this is not everywhere, in Belgium Father's Day is a week earlier and in Germany they celebrate Father's Day on the same day as Ascension Day (the Son returns to the Father).

Father's Day also for appreciating other men in your life

The headline says it all, we don't necessarily have to celebrate Father's Day for fathers. There are plenty of families where the term "Father's Day" has a negative effect. For example, there are families with two mothers, families where the father is no longer alive, compound families with a bonus father, families with one parent, and name a few more. Therefore, we also like to give attention to men who act as father figures and who certainly deserve appreciation as well. Whether that is your own father, your grandfather, uncle or your best friend who is doing incredibly well as a father, Father's Day is the perfect time to arrange a little something for them as well.
